Pop Up Cafe

It has been a good few weeks now that I have been submerged in the Pop Up Cafe that comes around every Thursday which along with Soft Touch Arts, Leicester College students and other young people get involved with the cooking and presenting of food to the cafe. Right now as I typed the pop up cafe is open and already 25 people have come in and experienced the atmosphere and food the young people provide to just the ever day passer by, or the business man on his lunch break. Surveys have suggested that a majority love the food […] Read more »

From 16th of January until the 6th of March Soft Touch Arts alongside New Walk Museum will be exhibiting young people’s artwork for free ,as part of a touring exhibition. I have got involved as a young curator and invigilator of the exhibition, so have chosen which artwork goes where, put up the artwork and watched over the exhibition whilst many have come to view the work of young people. The exhibition has been in Margate and will venture on to the Isle of White but it has been a good experience to have been part of the process and […] Read more »

14th of February, 2015, love was in the air as Valentine’s day filled the hearts of many… we decided to try and captivate these hearts down a darker route for the love filled day. Bleeding HeART was an exhibition I and Lewis organised with the assistance from other young people; Mason, Emily, Nathan, Kim, Sam and Skyla. The exhibition involved interactive elements as well as presenting artwork for the public to see and gruesome but delicious food to try. The venue was at the Queen of Bradgate pub, who thankfully gave us the space for free and produced the food […] Read more »

Last year in December Soft Touch Arts presented ‘A Fright Night Before Christmas’ giving participants a scare as a special early christmas gift. Great feedback was given for this new trial event that the young people have decided to do another one this year on the 1st and 8th of December. A top secret location has been selected for this years Fright Night which only those acting and helping know about. This year we’ve been able to plan out the event much more in detail and with everyone who is involved, getting each of their inputs. The theme has been […] Read more »

Face Painting

Zombies, Models Lewis Buttery, Ed Thurlow and Abby Smith

I have recently found a new like in face painting; whilst on a Halloween project I attempted to paint Lewis’ face, as you can see in the first image captioned ‘creepy clown’ and received positive feedback as well as one of the young participants asking for me to paint his face! From then on I was engaged with this creative art form and continued. The next event to arise was Halloween itself where I quickly adjusted mine and Lewis’ face to suit the characters we were playing. After that I chose to use the upcoming Fright Night Soft Touch have […] Read more »

Lewis at Soft Touch Arts

I began attending the STart project when I was in a bad place: I went through a period of depression through my final years of secondary school and, since leaving, had shut myself out from the world for about a year and a half. I’d worked with the lack of motivation that came with being depressed because school was compulsory; as well as being all that I knew. From the youngest age I’ve also had social anxiety, which I’ve been told is likely to have brought the depression on. I finished secondary school in 2011, earning the equivalent of 13 A*-C grade […] Read more »

Cank Street

Among the Yellow by Abby Smith

Leicester’s own Cank Street Gallery today opened its first Open Art Exhibition; containing work from myself, Abby Smith (another blogger here), and Kieran Walsh (who works with us at Soft Touch). The exhibit is expecting to take in visitors from around the world, because of the recent opening of the nearby Richard III Visitor Centre. On top of that, there is a grand prize of £500 to go to an overall winner; so this is a great opportunity for budding artists like myself and Abby. The exhibition closes on the 25th of October 2014, just under 3 weeks away. Cank Street Gallery can be found […] Read more »

STart cardboard boxes

Fran-A-Tron is ready to complete her mission.

Thursday the 28th Of August, once again another STart session took place and this time it saw the creation of cardboard being turned into something more. It started off with our sessional worker doing some cleaning up before the session started. She was about to throw out a cardboard box that was no longer needed when I decided that it could have some use before completely getting rid of. Cutting out some holes in the box for arms and eyes and drawing a smile I had a character that gave influence for Kieran to go on to along with Jack […] Read more »

Luv Leicester: Exhibition Outcomes

IMG_2660

From the 5th to the 15th of August 2014, the Luv Leicester exhibition opened in the Highcross; and the general public came to look at our young people’s work. A few days before the launch, we had time to set up; clean up the place; and make it look like a presentable, worthwhile exhibit. Within the exhibit, my main role was along-side Lewis; taking photos of the public for our portrait wall, telling us why they love Leicester. We also ended up taking count of who came into the exhibit and other small chores, such as buying lunch. On most days we […] Read more »
